Digital Nomad Residence in Bulgaria

Legal assistance for obtaining residence in Bulgaria under the Digital Nomad framework.

The service includes eligibility assessment, preparation of application documents, and guidance through the residence permit procedure before the competent authorities.

The price includes audit and preparation of all documents for visa and residence.

Not included in the price are notary fees, fees for official translations, and legalization/apostille costs, if such services are required.

As part of the service, we prepare and/or coordinate the following documents:

  • Application for visa D
  • Application for long-term residence (Digital Nomad basis)
    Legal grounds explanation and cover letter
  • Declaration of remote work activity
  • Declaration of sufficient and stable income
  • Accommodation declaration (address registration support)
  • Health insurance compliance
  • Document review and completeness check
  • Appointment coordination instructions with the Migration Office

⚠️ Official documents issued abroad (e.g. criminal record, employer letters) are reviewed, but issued by the client and may require apostille and sworn translation, which are not included unless explicitly agreed.

2-3 months from start until obtaining both visa and residence. Depends on how fast you can provide the required documents and book visa interview

To qualify under the Digital Nomad regime, the applicant must generally meet the following criteria:

  • Non-EU / non-EEA citizenship
  • Remote work for:
    - a foreign employer, or
    - own foreign company / freelance activity
  • Proof of income (50× the Bulgarian minimum salary for last year ~ EUR 27,5k for 2025)
  • Valid health insurance covering Bulgaria
  • Clean criminal record from the country of residence
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of accommodation in Bulgaria
  • No working/management contract for a Bulgarian company (such employment would disqualify you for the digital nomad program)

Eligibility is assessed individually. Meeting the formal criteria does not guarantee approval.

  • Documents must be signed personally by the applicant
  • Some documents for the residence are signed in Bulgaria after visa obtaining and your arrival

Q: Do I need a Bulgarian company?
A: No. The permit is based on foreign employment or foreign business activity.

Q: Can I work for Bulgarian clients?
A: No. The residence permit does not grant access to the Bulgarian labor market.

Q: Can my family apply with me?
A: Family members may apply separately under family reunification rules after the main permit is granted.

Q: Is this a tax residence permit?
A: No. Tax residency depends on separate criteria (183-day rule, center of vital interests).

Q: Can the permit be renewed?
A: Yes, provided the conditions continue to be met.

Q: Is approval guaranteed?
A: No. The Migration Directorate has discretionary authority.

Expedited processing is generally not available, as timelines are set by the authorities. We can though choose express service for the receiving of the Residence card once the permit is approved.
