Retirement Residence in Bulgaria

Legal assistance for obtaining a Bulgarian Type D Visa and a Residence Permit for non-EU citizens who receive a state or private pension and wish to retire in Bulgaria.

The service includes an eligibility assessment, preparation of the required documentation, assistance with the Type D visa application, and support throughout the residence permit procedure before the Bulgarian authorities.

The price includes the preparation and coordination of all documents required for both the visa and the residence permit application.

Not included in the price are government fees, notary fees, official translations, legalization/apostille costs, health insurance, and any third-party expenses.

As part of the service, we prepare and/or coordinate the following documents:

  • Type D Visa application;
  • Application for a Bulgarian Residence Permit;
  • Legal grounds explanation and cover letter;
  • Declaration regarding accommodation in Bulgaria;
  • Residence application forms;
  • Document review and completeness check;
  • Guidance regarding legalization and sworn translations;
  • Appointment instructions;
  • Communication with the Bulgarian Migration Directorate where required.

⚠️ Official documents issued abroad (such as pension certificates, criminal record certificates, civil status documents, etc.) are provided by the client and may require legalization/apostille and sworn translation, which are not included unless explicitly agreed.

Approximately 2–4 months from the start of the engagement until obtaining both the Type D Visa and the Residence Permit.

The exact timeline depends on:

  • how quickly the applicant provides the required documents;
  • appointment availability at the Bulgarian Embassy;
  • processing times of the Bulgarian authorities.

To qualify, the applicant must generally meet the following conditions:

  • Be a non-EU / non-EEA / non-Swiss citizen;
  • Have acquired the right to receive a pension under the legislation of their home country or another country;
  • Possess sufficient financial means to support themselves in Bulgaria;
  • Hold a valid passport;
  • Have valid health insurance covering Bulgaria;
  • Provide proof of accommodation in Bulgaria;
  • Present a clean criminal record;
  • Obtain a Bulgarian Type D Visa before applying for residence.

Eligibility is assessed individually. Meeting the formal requirements does not guarantee approval.

  • Most documents may be signed remotely before the visa application.
  • Certain declarations may need to be signed personally after arrival in Bulgaria.
  • Detailed signing instructions are provided once the document package has been prepared.
